March 31, 2003 (JST)

Topics

Main topics of the symposium are classified from the following two aspects; targets and methods. Individuals who wish to present a paper should choose both of one target and one method relevant to the paper. EcoDesign symposium covers not only electric and electrical products but also various products (including automobiles, heavy machines, machine tools, furniture, etc.), buildings, urban infrastructure, and society.

Targets

A: Sustainable Society
This area includes environmentally conscious social system and service, regional planning , eco-town, green procurement, resource saving and energy-conservation social system, reverse logistics system, and pollution-free environment and waste treatment system, etc.

B: Environmentally Conscious Businesses
This area includes eco-business model, corporate strategy, value chain / supply chain management, service strategy for dematerialization, business of waste treatment or waste water handing, consumption pattern analysis and consumer behavior model, eco-fund, zero emission, and leasing system of products, etc.

C: Environmentally Conscious Products & Services
This area focuses on environmentally conscious products (such as modular product, long-life product, resource saving and energy-saving product, and up-gradable product, etc), services related to eco-products, and servicification of products.
D: Environmentally Conscious Processes
This area focuses on various processes related to product life cycles, such as environmentally conscious manufacturing, maintenance and after market services, collection process, disassembly process, reuse and recycling processes, remanufacturing process, waste treatment process, and power generation process, etc.

Methods

I:  Design methodologies and tools
This area discusses design methodologies, methods / tools, and case studies for EcoDesign, such as design for environment (DfE), design for X, life cycle design, modular design, service engineering, QFD, and concurrent / collaborative engineering, etc.
II: Enabling Technologies
This area discusses enabling technologies related to the EcoDesign targets; including resource saving and energy-conservation technology, energy recovery technology, reuse and recycling technology, waste treatment technology, automation in recycling, information technology, Eco-materials, and lead-free solders, etc.

III: Management systems and tools
This area discusses management system, tools, and case studies for EcoDesign, such as environmental education, eco-labeling, environmental accounting, information sharing, environmental report, environmental management system, eco-fund, environmental grading, and product life cycle management, etc.
IV: Evaluation methods and tools
This area discusses evaluation methods, tools, and case studies for EcoDesign, such as environmental performance indicators, eco-efficiency, factor X, grading/index of sustainability, LCA, and life cycle costing, etc.

Procedure to Submit Papers

Submission of Extended Abstracts

Please note that the format of abstract and the review procedure have been changed and are not same as those of EcoDesign 2001 or EcoDesign f99. Individuals who wish to present technical papers should read the instruction first and then submit extended abstracts through our web site before April 15, 2003.

At the submission, the following data should be input perfectly.
Each extended abstract is limited to two pages (A4, 210 mm ~ 297 mm) including some important figures and tables if necessary, and references. Submission that does not fit the above conditions might be subjected to reject.

The final manuscripts (papers) should be from two to eight pages (A4, 210 mm X 297 mm), including all figures, tables, and references. Modified version of the extended abstracts can be accepted as two page manuscript, if authors want.

Each extended abstract is reviewed by the international EcoDesign 2003 program committee and be judged as accepted as oral presentation, accepted as poster, or rejected according to the following criteria, in order to increase quality of the symposium. This review process does not imply that EcoDesign 2003 selects only academic papers. Papers describing industrial, business, and social experiences are also very welcome.
Notification with some reviewersf comments will be sent in late June, 2003 by e-mail. Any inquiry for the submission, please feel free to contact the Secretariat by e-mail at your earliest convenience.

The following time table is for reviewing extended abstracts and submission of manuscripts(papers).

Official Language

The official language of all presentations is English.

Completed papers for the Proceedings

Proceedings will be published from IEEE Computer Society Press. Manuscripts are from two to eight pages (A4, 210 mm ~ 297 mm), including all figures, tables, and references.

Modified version of the extended abstracts can be accepted as two page manuscript, if authors want.

All manuscripts should be submitted before August 31, 2003. Detailed information will be sent with notification of acceptance.

The extended abstract of accepted paper will be published by means of paper and the paper will be published by means of electronic proceedings. The used fonts and format of submitted manuscripts will be checked to make electronic proceedings.

Awards

Best papers will be selected and recommended for awards by the Best Paper Award Committee.
